WHAT IS THE PAAO?

The Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO) is a non-profit organization founded in 1939. The mission of the PAAO is continuing education for ophthalmologists, prevention of blindness, and promotion of scientific and cultural exchange among ophthalmologists of the Western Hemisphere and beyond. With members in more than 35 countries, the PAAO provides a forum for professionals from all over the world to gather and focus on ways to standardize and improve ophthalmic knowledge and skills for the improvement of patient care.

MEMBERSHIP BENEFITS
• Reduced registration fees at PAAO congresses and regional meetings.
• Reduced prices on clinical slides and videos on a variety of topics.
• Through the Visiting Professors Program selected members travel to National Congresses with their round-trip coach airfare paid by the PAAO.
• The Fellowships Committee provides a listing of fellowships and observerships in the United States which can accept Latin American participants.
• The Research Committee offers two scholarships to the ARVO meeting for young and promising ophthalmologists.
• The multilingual newsletter Vision Pan-America.

ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP
An applicant for Active Membership (Miembro Titular membership) in the PAAO shall be a physician who holds a degree of Doctor of Medicine, Doctor of Osteopathy (or an equivalent medical degree as determined by the Board of Directors), who holds a valid and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the country in which the practice of medicine is regularly conducted, who has completed formal training in ophthalmology (or its equivalent, as determined by the Board of Directors), and who is a member in good standing of the national society affiliated with the Association in the country in which the practice of medicine is regularly conducted. If the candidate has a practice in more than one country, he or she must be a member in good standing of the national society affiliated with the Association in each country in which the practice of medicine is conducted.

HOW TO APPLY FOR ACTIVE MEMBERSHIP
Instructions for Completing your Application

Please read these instructions before completing your application. The Board of Directors may decline or delay an application by reason of any substantial misstatement or omission of material fact from an application or any other information submitted with respect to an application.

Applicant Information
The information you provide will be used for the membership directory, your membership certificate, all correspondence and promotional material, and for addressing the PAAO newsletter The Pan-American.

Certification
Please print the names of the country(s) in which you are licensed to practice. A copy of your membership certificate or a letter from the affiliated society must accompany your application for Active membership.

Application Endorsement
An endorsement form is located on the back of the application form. This endorsement must be completed by a PAAO Active Member (Miembro Titular), or Life Member.

Membership Dues
Active Member dues of $150 must be submitted with your application. This covers your membership dues from January 1 through December 31. Dues are based on a calendar year. Payment must be made in United States currency. Accepted forms of payment include cash, check, International MasterCard or Visa, American Express, and wire transfers. Additional membership categories include Member-in-Training (residents and fellows with letter) $50 and Corresponding (members outside the Western Hemisphere) $100.
