Providing continuing medical education is one of the primary activities of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO). With the advent of new technologies, the PAAO plans to take full advantage of these latest technologies to provide education and updates from the world’s experts in Ophthalmology in a flexible and cost-effective way.
E-learning can help in meeting the demand for education for ophthalmologists who are unable to attend national and international medical meetings. E-learning does not have capacity restraints: there is not the problem of a full classroom.
E-learning can help instructors to reach students with quality material that otherwise would not be possible. E-learners can go through training sessions from anywhere, usually at anytime, overcoming the many physical or time-constraints imposed by personal responsibilities or commitments.
- Learners may have the option to select learning materials that meets their level
of knowledge and interest.
- Learners can study wherever they have access to a computer and Internet.
- Self-paced learning allows learners to work at their own pace.
Please check back frequently as there will be constant activity and updates in this area of the website. The PAAO plans to launch a virtual library of choices of different modes of education.
First we plan to offer prepared courses with power point presentations or audio courses or pre-recorded video courses where participants access course materials on their own schedule. Students are not required to be together at the same time for these methods of instruction.
The other type of instruction would be where all participants are "present" at the same time. It resembles traditional classroom teaching methods despite the participants being located remotely such as web conferencing or live-streaming. This will be developed at a later date.
