The Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology
The mission of the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO) is continuing education for ophthalmologists, prevention of blindness, and promotion of scientific and cultural exchange among ophthalmologists of the world. The PAAO provides a forum for professionals from all over the world to gather and focus on ways to standardize and improve ophthalmic knowledge and skills for the improvement of patient care.
The Pan-American Ophthalmological Foundation
The Pan-American Ophthalmological Foundation (PAOF) was founded 1959 by Dr. Brittain F. Payne, Dr. J. Wesley McKinney, Dr. James H. Allen, Dr. Algernon B. Reese, and Dr. A. Edward Maumenee of the United States to support the Pan-American Association of Ophthalmology (PAAO) and its educational programs.

I. Basic Sciences Course Scholarships

1. Andean Basic Sciences Course
Dr. Carlos Vera-Cristo from Medellín, Colombia, is course director. The PAOF provides the funding of one (1) scholarship for the Andean Course. This course meets every two years and the scholarship amount equivalent to one student’s fee is paid to the Andean Course directly for distribution.

2. Puerto Rican Basic Sciences Course "Dr. Guillermo Picó Santiago"
Dr. Guillermo Picó Santiago founded this course in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The course is held over a 10 week period (January-March) at the University of Puerto Rico. Click here for course information and the course application form. The PAOF provides the funding of one (1) scholarship per course in the amount of $750.
3. Brazilian Basic Sciences Course
Dra. Ana Maria N. Petrilli from São Paulo is course director. The PAOF provides scholarship funding of $750 for the course.
4. Southern Cone Basic Sciences Course
This course was founded in 1983 by Dr. Aldolfo Gómez Morales and is held in Buenos Aires. The PAOF provides one (1) scholarship per course at $750.

II. Gillingham Pan-American Fellowship
Two fellowships in the amount of $10,000 each are offered to qualified Latin American candidates who have been accepted into an accredited training program in the United States and Canada. The applicant should be no more than 2 to 3 years out of his/her residency program. Candidates must be ECFMG certified. Funding provided by Retina Research Foundation of Houston, Texas.

III. Paul Kayser International Travel Scholar Award
Up to eight (8) 2-week scholarships in the amount of $3,000 each are offered to US and Canadian candidates for the purpose of introducing exceptional North American ophthalmologists to the best practice and research approaches in Latin America. Applicants should be third year residents or first year fellows. Funding provided by Retina Research Foundation of Houston, Texas.

IV. Tim and Judith Sear Scholarship
One (1) scholarship in the amount of $4,000 is offered annually. Candidates must be outstanding students who have presented papers or published during their training period. This scholarship recognizes potential future professors and leaders within the organization. The applicant should be a general ophthalmologist, no more than 2 to 3 years out of his/her residency program, and from Mexico, Central, or South America. Candidates must have already been accepted into a training program. Funding provided by Tim & Judith Sear for the advancement of education in ophthalmology throughout the world.

V. Latin American/PAAO Pediatric Ophthalmology Fellowship (NEW!)
Application Deadline: August 10, 2008
Program Description:
A one or two year hands-on pediatric ophthalmology fellowship is available for one qualified Latin American ophthalmologist through the PAAO in the Department of Ophthalmology at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas and its affiliated Children’s Medical Center. The position will include the opportunity for direct patient medical and surgical interactions as well as the opportunity to participate in significant clinical research activities.

          Community Faculty:      David Stager Sr. MD, George Beauchamp MD, David Stager Jr. MD
          Department Chair:        James McCulley MD FACS FRCOphth(UK)
Applicant Qualifications: The following qualifications for a successful candidate are as follows:

  1. General ophthalmologist, age 35 years or younger, from Mexico, Central or South America, or the Caribbean.
  2. Fluent in both written and spoken English.
  3. Willing to commit for one or two years of training.
  4. Completion of a recognized ophthalmology residency in Latin America.
  5. Established medical and surgical competence.
  6. Highly recommended by chairperson and training program director.
  7. Commitment to return to Latin America at conclusion of fellowship training program.

Medical licensure during program: Either (1) a physician in training license, if all necessary parts of USMLE has been passed, or (2) an Assistant Visiting Professor’s license if USMLE not taken and passed.
Compensation: Salary of approximately $54,000 per year plus fringe benefits will be provided.

V. ARVO Travel Awards
NEW Application Deadline: Thursday, February 28, 2008.
NOTE: Applications for ARVO Travel Awards MUST be submitted by email to info@paao.org.
Acceptable file formats include DOC, PDF, HTML, JPG.

Requirements:
A) The candidate must be 40 years of age or younger.
B) The candidate must be a Resident or Fellow.
C) The candidate must be lead/first author on an accepted Paper or Poster scheduled for presentation at the 2008 ARVO meeting. A copy of the acceptance letter/email from ARVO or scheduling information should be included with the application.
D) The candidate's application must be approved and signed by his/her chairman or national society.
E) The candidate must be or become a member of the PAAO. Click here to submit your membership application online. If a selected candidate is not a PAAO member, Member-in-Training dues of $50 will be deducted from the scholarship stipend.
F) Recipients of the 2008 ARVO Travel Awards must attend Pan-American Research Day (Saturday, April 26, 2008, Fort Lauderdale Renaissance Hotel) and present a summary of his/her work being presented at the ARVO meeting (April 27-May 1, 2008). Additionally, candidates must be present at the awards ceremony in order to receive their prizes.  Award monies cannot be mailed nor accepted by a third party or proxy.  Failure to comply may result in forfeiture of award.

Up to five (5) travel award in the amount of $2,500 will be given to selected candidates from Latin America, Spain or Portugal to attend the 2008 ARVO (Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology) annual meeting.
